Welcome!

The citizens of Eunoia Society welcome you as you are! As musicians, composers and technologists, we enjoy composing original music from acoustic Jazz to experimental HipHop and movie scores. We choose to use liberation as our motivation. Music as our art. Technology as our tool. Having an open-minded approach to creativity and experimentation allows liberation in our world and permits us to be playful and child-like in our musical science projects.

We can only promise to be authentic. We challenge our desires to be perfect humans by not perceiving our mistakes as mistakes, but as accepting our identity and individuality because we are human and we are flawed. Perfection is the death of our art, as it restricts the freedom in building our utopia. We are here to create great black sonic art that benefits society. We are sonic technologists.

US

Eunoia Society is JoVia Armstrong (Percussion) and Leslie DeShazor (Electric Violin). Both are accomplished musicians whose compiled artist roster includes Stevie Wonder, El DeBarge, Bob James, Roy Hargrove, Martha Reeves, Res, Pat Metheny, Diane Schuur, Regina Carter, Omar, Les Nubians, Maysa, Rahsaan Patterson, Joe Vasconsellos and more. But, before working with these amazing artists, the two were grinding in Detroit where they met as freelancers. JoVia and Leslie are also members of Detroit’s Global Jazz group, Musique Noire. Using processed effects on instruments that we least expect helps them create a unique sound.

The Music

Eunoia Society was founded in 2019 to support Armstrong’s dissertation research in the Integrated Composition, Improvisation, and Technology program at the University of California-Irvine. The group’s instrumentation includes a hybrid cajon kit, electric bass, guitar, and electric violin. Their current work aims to offer contemplative and therapeutic groove-based music for listeners.

Armstrong’s work interrogates contemporary music’s usage of time-based processing, repetition, and drones. Her research is partially informed by how and why ancient societies performed their rituals and ceremonies in caves. Caves contain reflective surfaces that acoustical architects have tried to recreate when building amphitheaters and catholic churches. Since people practiced spirituality in caves, time-based processing, such as reverb and delay, has become a part of Eunoia’s compositional and production work.

The ensemble demonstrates working models of how composers, including beat-makers, can explore techniques for creating music for immersive environments, such as multi-channel audio systems for spatial performances and performing within augmented spaces such as virtual reality. Possessing an innovative and audacious spirit, Eunoia Society utilizes the latest technological advances in audio while composing music that entertains its audiences.
